In this day and age many are looking to cosmetic procedures to strive for that ‘fresh’ look.
Before making any decisions it is important to be armed with the right information, and what better way than this informative blog post. I have been fortunate enough to have had an in depth Q&A with some of Perth’s leading cosmetic physicians. Here is Part 1 with Dr Katina Elfis

Q1. What are anti-wrinkle injections?
Anti-wrinkle treatments/injections are either muscle relaxants used in the treatment of dynamic facial wrinkles (wrinkles that form as a result of facial expression) or wrinkle fillers that plump lines, lips, or facial contours.
The growing acceptance of anti-wrinkle treatments has led to one particular brand of anti-wrinkle treatment becoming the byword for all such treatments. Much like we use Panadol instead of Paracetemol as the byword for pain-relief medication.
In Australia, there are 3 different brands of anti-wrinkle treatments (known as muscle relaxants) approved for use by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. These are Dysport, Botox & Xeomin. They are all safe & effective, yet individual & distinct in their action.
Q2. What is the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and fillers?
Anti-wrinkle treatments/injections are wrinkle relaxers that improve facial lines or wrinkles by relaxing the muscles of facial expression. Whereas dermal fillers will smooth facial lines or wrinkles by plumping the localised area. They can also restore volume to areas such as cheeks or lips. In Australia, there are three wrinkle relaxing products approved for cosmetic use by the Therapeutics Goods Administration in the treatment of frown lines, crows feet and forehead lines. Not all products are approved for all the indications. All three products are safe and effective, but are manufactured very differently. Whilst the dose of each product is measured in units, they are not comparable or interchangeable. Please don’t be confused about the ‘units’ your doctor may discuss with you during your consultation.
Q3. Which areas can be treated, how long does it take and is it painful?
Anti-wrinkle treatments are commonly used to treat the lines that appear from the repeated use of the muscles of facial expression. With repeated expression, these lines can become permanently visible giving the individual the appearance of looking angry or worried.
This can have a negative psychological impact on a person’s self esteem. By reversing or improving the appearance of these lines it can have a positive effect on an individual’s perception of oneself. You may experience slight discomfort during the treatment process. This discomfort is transient. Anti-wrinkle injections to relax the muscles of facial expression will only take a few minutes. However, the effects will not be visible for a few days.
Q4. What do anti-wrinkle treatment results look like, how long before results can be seen and how long do they last?
Anti-wrinkle treatments will relax the facial lines created by the muscles of facial expression. The skin around the treatment area will also look smoother. The individual will still be able to laugh and smile, just with less wrinkling of the skin in the treated areas. The appearance of results after treatment will vary with the individual and the product used. You can see results from Dysport in just 2-3 days, Botox within 1 week and Xeomin also within 2-3 days after treatment. The duration of effect from the treatment will also vary with the individual and the product used. Dysport can last beyond 4 months, Botox can last at least 4 months and Xeomin can last up to 4 months.
Q5. For people considering an anti-wrinkle treatment how should they prepare?
It is important to research a reputable clinician & ensure that you are comfortable with them before you proceed with treatment. During your pre-treatment consultation it is important to discuss your current medical state, the treatment process (including pre & post treatment care) & your treatment expectations. Despite popular belief, there is more than one type of anti-wrinkle treatment available, so it is important to discuss all the different anti-wrinkle treatments available to you so that you can make an informed choice.
Very wise words from a wise woman. I hope you have found this blog post as informative as I did writing it !
