Q1. How will a person look directly after an anti-wrinkle treatment?
Straight after an anti-wrinkle treatment, a person will look exactly as they did before, except for the occasional pinpoint bruise or red dot at the injection point from the insertion of the needle. Seeing results after anti-wrinkle treatments really depends on the individual. You can see results from Dysport in just 2-3 days, Botox within 1 week and Xeomin also within 2-3 days after treatment. Clinical evidence has found Dysport can last beyond 4 months, Botox can last at least 4 months and Xeomin lasts up to 4 months.
Q2. What are the signs a person should look for to tell if they need anti-wrinkle injections?
We all have different reasons for wanting to change the way we look and ultimately the way we feel. The face allows us to express our emotions and over time the repeated use of facial muscles can cause lines and wrinkles to occur–and for some this can be something that can have a negative effect. Once a physical attribute starts negatively affecting us, enhancement is often a positive step, with studies showing treatment satisfaction corresponds with greater positive self-perception.
There are a number of signs that can help a person to determine if they need anti-wrinkle injections including:
- Horizontal forehead lines deepening with raising one’s eyebrows
- Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows that deepen on frowning making one look angry or worried or stressed
- Crows feet, the lines on the sides of the eyes
- Wrinkles on the chin
- Creases on the sides of the nose on scrunching one’s nose (also known as bunny lines)
- Tight bands in the neck
Q3. Can anti-wrinkle injections be used as a preventative action to slow ageing?
Anti-wrinkle injections cannot slow down the ageing process but they can prevent lines and wrinkles forming and hence delay some of the signs of ageing and make us look more fresh, less tired, and in some cases, we can look younger.
Q4. How can the loss of facial expressions and a frozen looking face be avoided?
There are many routes to ensuring you don’t lose facial expressions or end up with a frozen looking face. When it comes to anti-wrinkle treatments every individual’s needs are different and it’s my job to assess the client and determine the best treatment for them. It’s important to fully assess the patient at rest and with expressions so that the treatment can be individualised and a ‘frozen’ look or loss of expression can be avoided.
Some of the key things to watch out for are not overdoing it with excessive use of wrinkle relaxants in one treatment session – rather administer smaller quantities in stages over time and assessing the ideal dose to achieve the desired effect.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask about the anti-wrinkle treatments on offer. Despite popular belief, there is more than one type of anti-wrinkle treatment available. The Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved three types of anti-wrinkle treatments for use in Australia – Dysport, Botox and Xeomin. And while two of those brands may not be as well known, rest reassured that they too have been extensively studied, are well established treatments and have been deemed safe and effective to use. There are no generic anti-wrinkle treatments available in Australia.
Q5. What are your top tips to prevent the signs of ageing?
There are many things we can do to prevent the signs of ageing, however sometimes our genetics take over and we may need a little help to limit the speed at which we age. Here are some of my top tips:
- Avoiding anything that accelerates the ageing process is essential, so things such as too much sun, smoking and visiting solariums should be avoided.
- Protecting the skin from the sun at all times – avoid direct sun exposure without protection with hat, clothing and SPF 50+
- An excellent skin care routine with medical grade skin care products can also be beneficial, so think about these products cleanser, toner, exfoliator, moisturiser, and topical vitamin a, vitamin B, vitamin C, peptides and growth factors
- For those interested in pushing the envelope with anti-ageing interventions – wrinkle relaxants, fillers and nonsurgical skin tightening and lifting treatments are amazing in terms of what they can do to help us look fresh and beautiful.
